Going Canoeing With Your Pomeranian

My Pomeranian thinks that the canoe is another vehicle of sorts, one which he can lean over the side and take a lap from the water when he chooses to. He wears a lifejacket and if it is a particularly hot day, I will wet it before putting it on so that it can offer some cooling comfort in the sun.
Before we go in the canoe though, I find it very helpful to take my dog on an off leash walk so that he is a bit tired. There is nothing worse than having a Pomeranian bouncing around the canoe and capsizing it.
If your Pomeranian is nervous at the thought of entering a canoe, practice getting him to jump in and out with the help of some yummy treats and also just hang out in the canoe letting him explore the vessel.
When you think you and your Pomeranian are ready to set sail, keep the trips close to the shoreline and relatively short in duration. This allows your dog to adjust to the feeling of being in a canoe and cuts down on swim time back to the shore in case you do capsize.
